Senator Ted Cruz proposes the El Chapo Act, enabling 14 billion dollars worth of assets from El Chap

14 billion dollars could go a long way.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz announced his El Chapo Act today, which would provide nearly 14 billion dollars for the funding of a border wall. El Chapo, or Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, the infamous Mexican drug lord, was extradited to the US after he had escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico.

As Trump appears to be softening on his stance to get funding for the wall in this year's budget, this bill could be a lifeline for the Republican Party. Recently, Trump seemed to hint that funding for the wall might have to wait until September, when the budget for next year will be approved. Now more than ever, the GOP needs to accomplish something in Congress. This bill offers a fantastic alternative to using, as the Democrats put it, "America's tax dollars," to fund the wall. Instead, money the US may never have ended up with would be used to protect America and strengthen its borders.

The El Chapo Act, or Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order (EL CHAPO) Act, would not only be a smart use of randomly acquired money by the United States, but it could also be used to secure our borders, something every Democrat should want to do. While this Act should be passed by every Republican and Democrat in the Senate, Democrats will most likely find fault with this legislation.

While Republicans need funding for the projects they promised their voters, Democrats will need continued funding for the not so affordable Affordable Care Act. Passing this bill would allow Democrats to keep border wall money out of the official budget while the wall gets funded.

The best strategy available for the Democrats right now would be to discreetly allow the bill to pass in the Senate with a simple majority while avoiding a filibuster. Democrats would continue their policy of opposing Trump and vote against the bill, appealing to their supporters, but the bill will be passed and the wall will be funded, America's borders will be protected, the government will not face a looming shutdown, and funds will be available for Obama's signature failure -- Obamacare.

With Trump's 100 days coming to a close and little passed accomplished in a GOP controlled congress, its about time something substantial gets done.
